In this video, I am going to show and explain how to apply my favorite ceramic windshield coating, Gtechniq G1 Smart Glass. This is an excellent glass coating that typically lasts at least 12+ months!
The first step before applying this coating is to thoroughly clean and wash the glass to get rid of any loose dirt and debris.
While the glass is still wet, you can then add some more lubrication and use a clay bar to make sure the glass is completely free of bonded contaminants, stuck on bug guts, etc.
For the best results, I always like to do a final cleaning of the glass with a light polish. You can use any paint polish or a dedicated glass polish like Gtechniq G4 Glass Polish. This will ensure every last bit of embedded dirt and road grime is out of the pores of the glass to ensure proper bonding of the coating. This is necessary because this coating chemically bonds to the glass unlike regular hydrophobic glass sealants.
Once the glass has been polished, remove the polishing residue with an isopropyl alcohol and water mixture. The glass should be squeaky clean and “grabby” at this point.
To apply the coating, spread several drops onto your applicator pad and begin applying from one side of the glass to the other with 50/50 overlapping passes. Apply more coating to the applicator pad as needed.
This coating requires 3 coats when applying to a windshield and 1 coat to the rest of the glass of the vehicle. Allow for 5 minutes in-between the first two coats of application and a final 15 minutes after the last application.
Finally, buff off the coating with a fresh clean microfiber and ensure there are no high spots or no excess coating is left behind. Often times, the coating can become sticky and difficult to remove but will easily come off with just a little of the supplied coating remover. Apply a light amount to your microfiber and continue buffing.
Once removed, your windshield is now protected from rain, bug guts, stubborn ice, and road grime for the next 12 months!
You shouldn’t have any need for your wipers above 45MPH now; however, if you do you and you experience any windshield chatter, make sure your windshield wipers are recently new and clean. If they are not, replace your old wipers with new ones. If they are, you can apply a small amount of coating to the wipers blades to help with this potential issue.
